Top 10 cars at the 2017 New York auto show

Power and speed are the themes at this year’s New York International Auto Show, where many automakers are revealing high-performance versions of sedans, sports cars, and SUVs. A couple of concepts are also in the mix, giving us a glimpse of what we could see on the road in the not-so-distant future. For those who can’t attend the event, which runs from April 14 through 23 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Manhattan’s West Side, here’s a peek at our top picks. (autoshowny.com)

Mercedes-AMG GLC63 SUV and Coupé

The most powerful version of the GLC mid-size crossover gets the AMG treatment with a hand-built, 4-litre biturbo V8 engine, an adaptive air suspension, a rear limited-slip differential, and the all-around sportiness for which AMG is known. Available in the traditional SUV body style or in coupe form, the vehicle has a base powertrain that provides 350kW and 650Nm of torque. And the S option for the Coupé puts out 375kW and 700Nm, and does the zero-to-100km/h dash in just 3.7 seconds. (mercedes-amg.com)

Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln’s redesigned, full-size luxury SUV boasts refined lines, an imposing stance, and the brand’s new front grille treatment. The new Navigator is powered by a 335kW, 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged engine that is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The interior focuses on Lincoln’s philosophy of “quiet luxury” and features noise-reduction technology inside the cabin. And six new drive modes tackle everything from ice to slow climbing. The premium Black Label edition also offers unique interior trims and a range of personalised services. (lincoln.com)

Audi TT RS

Audi’s most powerful production TT makes its debut in New York with a new 300kW, 2.5-litre turbocharged 5-cylinder engine that sends the high-performance coupe from zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds. Suspension and steering are specially tuned for this model, and standard all-wheel drive can send up to 100 per cent of the TT RS’s 480Nm of torque to the rear. Options include a sport exhaust, carbon ceramic brakes, and a Dynamic plus package that increases the car’s top speed from 250 mph to 280km/h.

Infiniti QX80 Monograph Concept

Although it’s only a design study, the QX80 gives us a glimpse of what a new full-size SUV from Infiniti could look like. The QX80 Monograph is bigger and badder than the QX70 and has a more upright stance, substantial front air intakes, and a gargantuan mesh front grille. The concept is evidence that Infiniti is going through a major shift of its design department. The brand’s former head of design, Alfonso Albaisa, now holds that responsibility for parent company Nissan, while the former design head of BMW, Karim Habib, will take the reins at Infiniti in July. Maserati Ghibli Nerissimo

The word “nerissimo” is Italian for “extremely black,” a term well suited to this special-edition Maserati Ghibli, of which only 450 examples will be produced for the US and Canada. The Nerissimo — whose name was crowdsourced from social media — is a version available in all Ghibli variants and includes glossy black 20-inch wheels, a black front grille, and black door handles. An optional sport package adds red calipers and red interior stitching. (maseratiusa.com)

Nissan GT-R Track Edition

With a stiffened chassis and an independent four-wheel suspension for more aggressive driving, the newest variant of Nissan’s supercar fits between the touring model and the line-topping racer. It uses a hand-assembled, 3.8-litre V6 engine and a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission to produce and manage 420kW and 633Nm of torque. The GT-R Track Edition also comes standard with a titanium exhaust, carbon-fibre rear spoiler, and 20-inch alloy wheels. (nissanusa.com)

Lexus LS 500 F Sport

A sportier version of Lexus’s new flagship sedan was revealed at this year’s New York International Auto Show. The Lexus LX 500 F Sport is fitted with larger brakes, a more intricate front grille, unique rocker panels, larger side air intakes, and exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels. It’s available with either the LS 500’s 310kW petrol engine or with a hybrid power train that promises a total of 264kW. Although power isn’t increased over the standard LS, the petrol-propelled version of the 500 F Sport has an available handling package that should improve performance with variable ratio steering and active rear steering. Genesis GV80 Concept

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury spinoff, unveiled its first SUV concept at the New York Auto Show, one penned by former Bentley designer Luc Donckerwolke and his team. The futuristic looking GV80 has an imposing, exaggerated look with its large, chromed mesh front grille, big lower air intakes, a muscular hood, and deep-cut rocker panels. And two thin horizontal rows of jeweled LEDs serve as headlights. Inside, the interior is spartan, with a wide display screen sitting atop the dash and only a shifter on the center console. In a nod to alternative power trains, the GV80 relies on hydrogen fuel-cell technology. (genesis.com)

Audi R8 LMS GT4

Designed for customer racers and their teams, this Audi R8 is built to GT4 racing specs and is based closely on the production R8 road car. Less powerful than its GT3 counterpart, the R8 GT4 uses Audi’s 370kW, naturally aspirated V10 engine and will compete in the GT4 racing series across the globe, going up against the likes of the Porsche Cayman GT4, the Aston Martin GT4, and the Maserati Gran Turismo MC. The Audi R8 LMS GT4 will make its track debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May. (audiusa.com)

Porsche 911 GT3

Porsche’s fastest street-legal 911 makes its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show. The latest GT3 gets a new naturally aspirated, 4-litre flat-six engine, derived from those used in Porsche’s 911 racecars. The engine churns out 373kW and 460Nm of torque, and can be paired with Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch transmission or a 6-speed manual. With the PDK, the GT3 can dash from zero to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds (the manual is 0.6 seconds faster). The GT3 also gets rear-axle steering for more precise performance. (porsche.com)
