Lake Wakatipu's Makaturi Lodge - where Middle Earth was born
During the last Ice Age, some 15,000 years ago, a mammoth glacier broke off from the arctic and slowly made its way north west. On it travelled, gliding through those unchartered waters until it finally reached New Zealand, carving out what is now called Lake Wakatipu.
At 84km long it is New Zealand’s third largest river. Surrounded by mountains, the region has become known for its breathtaking scenic beauty. So ethereal is the region, that Lake Wakatipu's stunning alpine backdrop has been used in a number of TV series and movies, most notably The Lord Of The Rings.
